The two unions were amalgamated and called Malayan Airways/ Quantas Empire Airways Local Employees' union. Only employees of these two Airlines and their Associate and Subsidiary Companies were eligible for membership.

The first Collective Agreement between what was known as Malayan Airways and SATU, which at the time was known as Malayan Airways/ Qantas Empire Airways Local Employee's Union. This agreement was signed on 10 Jun 1962.



10 Jun 1962
Following the enactment of the Industrial Relations Act in 1960, the first Collective Agreement was signed between Malayan Airways and the Union.



01 Jul 1962
We became the first union in Singapore to be affiliated to the International Transport-workers' Federation (ITF).



01 Jul 1964
The Union became an affiliate of the National Trades Union Congress.


Mr. Clarence de Silva seals the deal with a warm handshake. The agreement covered all local employees of Malayan Airways including pilots, flight stewards and stewardesses, aircraft engineers, commercial, clerical and manual employees.

20 Oct 1965
The official opening of "Union House" at 20 Beng Wan Road by Comrade Ho See Beng then Chairman, NTUC.

23 Aug 1967
The name Malayan Airways/ Qantas Empire Airways Local Employees' Union was changed to Singapore Air Transport-workers' Union (SATU).
